Totally stoked. A serious, state-of-the-art glass blowing studio is the muse for a full-service smoke shop in black rock. By Dave Lowrie. Photos: Daniel Recinos. Back in the day your typical smoke shop conjured images of R. Crumb and other psychedelic comic books, before they were called graphic novels. They sold Big Bambu and tie-dyed Jerry t-shirts. Commonly known as “head shops,” they were the sort of spot you didn’t tell Mom you went after class in your friend’s VW pop-up van. Fast forward 40 years or so, when a new era of acceptance combined with true craftsmanship make some of today’s smoke shops virtual hot spots for enhanced expertise in the art of glass-blowing. Combining the creative side of an age-old craft with modern commerce, in five years, Stoked Progressive Smoke Shop and Studio in the burgeoning Black Rock neighborhood of Bridgeport has grown into one of Connecticut’s leading communities for advanced glass blowing production and training, for artisanal glassware, and for legal, hemp-based products and accessories.Co-owners Charlie Ronemus and Zac Weiner met in the hospitality business at Bodega Taco Bar in Darien. Five years ago, the forward-thinking, creative entrepreneurs (who, for fun, made adult Legos), saw an industry catch fire and made the leap from guacamole to glass-blowing. Admittedly, this was a “heady” time in the smoke shop business, as some states went purely recreational on marijuana while others, like Connecticut, toyed with a mix of medical and CBD. #stoked #blackrock #glassblowing #smokeshop
